PROJECT SUMMARY
The Reese Group, LLC (TRG) supported Tetra Tech and CalRecycle in the Wildfire Recovery and Cleanup process for Thomas and Carr Fires.
TRG assisted with environmental monitoring, cleanup, debris removal operations and debris management for properties destroyed by the Thomas and Carr Fire Incidents in Ventura and Shasta Counties, California. The Thomas Fire (2017) burned more than 281,000 acres and destroyed 1,063 structures throughout the City and County of Ventura and surrounding areas. The Carr Fire (2018) burned more than 229,651 acres, destroyed 1,604 structures and damaged 277 additional structures throughout the City of Redding and Shasta County.
TRG provided oversight of environmental sampling and monitoring conducted as part of the relief efforts, and included:
- Site assessments
- Wildfire debris management
- Air monitoring and sampling
- Soil sampling
- Data management
Site assessments were completed to identify hazardous materials and utilities within the footprint of the structure and within the property boundaries. Wildfire debris management consisted of overseeing a construction crew properly removing debris from the properties that burned TRG setup air monitoring stations to monitor airborne concentrations of heavy metals, asbestos, and dust during removal process. After debris removal, soil sampling was completed to test for heavy metals and mercury that may have leached into the soil during the fire. TRG also assisted with data management in order to properly inventory and analyze the data and report to the state of California, which properties were safe for the owner to return to.
