While with a previous firm, The Reese Group staff was retained by Crucible Materials Corporation Inc. (Crucible) to conduct a source area mitigation at the former Trent Tube Plant No. 3 in 2008. The goal of the project was to mitigate source area concentrations of select volatile organic compounds (VOCs), in particular trichloroethene (TCE) and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA) in groundwater to concentrations of less than 10,000 micrograms per liter (mg/L).
The source area was comprised of approximately two (2) acres and was located in the eastern portion of the manufacturing facility. The scope of work included the following:
- Conducted a pilot test to determine if the appropriate biological community existed in the aquifer to facilitate reductive dechlorination.
- Performed a Geoprobe investigation to further delineate the source areas.
- Injected oxidant (RegenOx; 22,913 pounds) into the subsurface in the vicinity of the know source areas utilizing injection wells.
- Injected hydrogen release compound (HRC Advanced; 14,115 pounds) into the subsurface to provide electron donor material to fuel anaerobic biodegradation processes in groundwater.
- Monitor groundwater quarterly for VOCs and water quality parameters at select locations within and or adjacent to the source areas.
